Anna Barham works in video, sculpture, drawing, print and performance, exploring an interest in language, systems, shifting meanings and intersections of the analogue and digital. Glitches and slippages often form an entrance point for her investigations, in particular the strange outcomes of human interactions with computers where language passes between different technologies and material forms. Barham has a background in Philosophy and Mathematics as well as Visual Art.
For Art Sheffield 2016, Barham presents the first UK exhibition of her video and sound work 000998146-horizontal-panning-empty-fashi_prores/böhm-on-dialogue-ch5 (2015). The work was created by corrupting the coding of a jpeg image of an empty fashion catwalk by interrupting it with passages drawn from the book ‘On Dialogue’, by quantum physicist David Böhm. When the jpeg is viewed as an image, this insertion of prose into the code produces various distortions, with shift, colour, panning and sound all generated randomly at the structural level of the image. Presented in a darkened space, the sound produces an immersive, visceral and strangely rhythmic composition. The corrupted code of the jpeg has been reproduced in full as a printed text in magazine form, available in the space.
